Historical research of Ancient Greece from the late Antique until late Middle Ages
Critical research of Ancient Greek History started in 19th century but the interest in Ancient Greek History appeared already in the period of late Roman Republic and early Roman Empire, immediately after the fall of the last Hellenistic states. Later interest in Ancient Greece started to decline and the last extensive antique work, which included a larger context of Ancient Greek History, was the Parallel Lives, a series of famous Greeks and Romans, written by Plutarch in the beginning of 2nd century. Interest in Ancient Greece also declined severely in period of late Antique, when Ancient Greece lost its meaning in a new, Christian world. The Chronicle of Eusebius contains only few informations of important events from Greek Mythology and History. In the most significant historical (and philosophical) works of late Antique, such as the City of God from Augustine of Hippo and the History against the Pagans from Orosius, Ancient Greece had only the secondary importance. By Augustine of Hippo we can find only singular mentions while Orosius dedicated to Ancient Greece only first from together seven books. All three authors, which had a big influence on history in Middle Ages, put in first place as the main object the Roman Empire and not the Ancient Greece.
In the period from late Antique until the late Middle Ages only the interest on Alexander the Great existed - as the only theme from Ancient Greek History. The cause for such attitude towards History of Ancient Greece can be found also in the language barrier; in West more famous and accessible were Roman historians, which did not write about Ancient Greece, while the works of Greek authors were mostly unaccessible or even unknown and neither did Byzantine historiography contributed any significant work about Ancient Greece.
